Artists and Artworks in This Collection

Gustav Klimt and Vienna 1900

Gustav Klimt is the main artist represented in this collection. Featured works include The Kiss, The Tree of Life, Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I, Hygieia, Death and Life, Expectation, Fulfillment, Hope II and Lady with a Fan. Browse the complete Gustav Klimt Collection.

The Kiss by Gustav Klimt

The Kiss is one of the collection’s strongest visual paths. Its gold surface, patterned clothing and closely joined figures translate across dresses, skirts, hoodies, jackets, bags and home decor. Explore the dedicated The Kiss Collection.

Jan Toorop and Georges de Feure

The collection also includes selected works by Jan Toorop and Georges de Feure. Toorop’s symbolic figures and curving lines provide a different approach to Art Nouveau, while de Feure’s decorative compositions connect the movement with poster design, fashion and interior decoration.

What Is Art Nouveau?

Art Nouveau was an international decorative movement that developed during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It is associated with flowing contours, plant forms, ornamental surfaces, stylised figures and the integration of art with architecture, furniture, posters, jewellery and other applied arts.

One of its most recognisable features is the long, curving line sometimes described as a whiplash curve. Artists and designers used these lines to connect figures, flowers, clothing, typography and surrounding decoration into a unified composition.

Art Nouveau and the Vienna Secession

The Vienna Secession forms an important Austrian context for this collection. Gustav Klimt helped establish the group in 1897 and served as its first president. Vienna’s version of modern decorative art combined symbolism, ornament, geometry and applied design rather than following one fixed visual formula.

Klimt’s gold-period paintings provide the strongest connection between this collection and Vienna 1900. Their decorative surfaces work especially well across fashion, textiles and large-format interior products.

Art Nouveau and Art Deco

Art Nouveau generally favours organic curves, flowers, vines and flowing figures. Art Deco emerged later and places greater emphasis on geometry, symmetry and streamlined forms. Choose Art Nouveau when you prefer natural contours and ornament rather than sharper architectural pattern.

Choose Art Nouveau by Product Type

Canvas and Wall Art

Canvas formats keep complete compositions visible and work well as the main focal point in a room. Browse the wider Wall Art Collection.

Clothing

Dresses, skirts, hoodies, jackets, shirts, cardigans and pyjamas use Art Nouveau pattern and colour across larger textile surfaces. Explore Women’s Clothing or Men’s Clothing.

Home Decor

Floor mats, pillows, blankets, curtains, rugs and duvet covers bring individual artworks into bedrooms, living rooms and creative spaces. Browse the Home Decor Collection.

Bags and Accessories

Handbags, phone cases and smaller accessories provide a more compact way to use Art Nouveau designs in everyday settings. Explore the Accessories Collection.

How to Choose an Art Nouveau Design

  • Choose the artwork first: begin with a complete painting or a recognisable decorative detail.
  • Match the format: use canvas for walls, textiles for larger patterns and bags for smaller everyday accents.
  • Check the palette: Klimt’s gold and black designs create a stronger contrast, while garden and landscape works produce a softer result.
  • Review each product page: materials, dimensions, construction and care requirements vary between product types.

"The Kiss" (1907-1908) is permanently housed at the Österreichische Galerie Belvedere in Vienna, Austria. This iconic painting is displayed in the Upper Belvedere palace and is one of Austria's most treasured artworks. The original measures 180 × 180 cm and cannot be moved due to its priceless nature. Gustav Klimt died on February 6, 1918, at age 55 from complications following a stroke. He suffered the stroke on January 11, 1918, and subsequently developed pneumonia which proved fatal. His death was sudden and unexpected, cutting short his artistic career during his most productive period. Despite his relatively short life, Klimt created masterpieces featured in our collection including The Kiss, Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer, and Tree of Life.

Gustav Klimt (1862-1918) was an Austrian symbolist painter and leader of the Vienna Secession movement. He revolutionized art by combining realistic portraits with decorative, golden patterns inspired by Byzantine mosaics. Klimt is famous for his "Golden Period" paintings featuring gold leaf, including "The Kiss" and "Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I." Our collection celebrates his unique style across designer clothing and luxury home decor.

Gustav Klimt is pronounced "GOO-stahf KLEEMT" in German/Austrian. "Gustav" has emphasis on the first syllable ("GOO-stahf"), and "Klimt" rhymes with "seemed" but with a "t" at the end. The "i" in Klimt sounds like "ee." Knowing the correct pronunciation helps when discussing our Klimt collection with fellow art enthusiasts!

"The Kiss" (1907-1908) is Gustav Klimt's most famous and recognizable painting. This iconic Art Nouveau masterpiece shows two lovers embracing, covered in elaborate golden robes against a golden background. The painting represents the pinnacle of Klimt's Golden Period and has become one of the most reproduced artworks in history. Our collection features The Kiss prominently across clothing, wall art, and accessories.

Gustav Klimt was 55 years old when he died on February 6, 1918. Born on July 14, 1862, in Baumgarten, Austria, Klimt lived during the height of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the Vienna Secession movement. Despite his relatively short life, he created an extraordinary artistic legacy during his Golden Period (1907-1909), masterpieces from which are featured throughout our collection.

"The Kiss" is famous because it perfectly captures universal themes of love and intimacy using Klimt's revolutionary golden style. The painting combines realistic human forms with decorative, Byzantine-inspired patterns, creating a unique artistic language. Its golden background and intricate geometric designs make it instantly recognizable. The work represents the height of Art Nouveau and Vienna Secession movements, themes celebrated throughout our Klimt collection.

Gustav Klimt paintings are primarily located in Vienna, Austria at the Belvedere Gallery (The Kiss, Judith), Neue Galerie in New York (Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I), and museums worldwide including the Leopold Museum Vienna, Museum of Applied Arts Vienna, and private collections. Since viewing originals requires international travel, our collection brings these masterpieces into your daily life through premium reproductions.

Klimt used gold for multiple reasons: inspiration from Byzantine mosaics he saw in Ravenna, Italy, symbolism of divine and eternal love, and to create decorative contrast with realistic human forms. Gold leaf also reflected Vienna's wealth during the Austro-Hungarian Empire and represented spiritual transcendence. This distinctive golden style defined his most famous works and is beautifully captured in our collection's reproductions.

Klimt became famous for founding the Vienna Secession movement (1897), pioneering Art Nouveau style in Austria, and creating his distinctive "Golden Period" paintings. His revolutionary combination of realistic portraiture with decorative, golden patterns broke artistic conventions. Works like "The Kiss," "Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I," and "Judith" established him as a master of symbolist art, themes celebrated in our collection.

Original Gustav Klimt paintings are among the world's most expensive artworks. "Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I" sold for $135 million in 2006, making it one of the highest-priced paintings ever sold. Other works sell for $20-80 million at auction. However, our museum-quality reproductions make Klimt's golden masterpieces accessible to art lovers through premium prints on clothing, wall art, and home decor.

Our Gustav Klimt collection spans multiple categories: Premium Clothing (t-shirts, sweatshirts, dresses featuring The Kiss, Portrait of Adele, and Tree of Life), Wall Art (canvas prints with gold effects, framed reproductions), Home Decor (throw pillows, blankets with Klimt patterns), and Accessories (tote bags, scarves showcasing golden designs). Each piece captures Klimt's distinctive Art Nouveau style and golden aesthetic using advanced printing technology.
