Who was Vincent van Gogh?
Vincent van Gogh was a Dutch artist born in 1853 who worked in the Netherlands, Belgium and France before his death in 1890. He decided to become an artist at the age of 27 and developed from darker early drawings and paintings into portraits, still lifes and landscapes with increasingly distinctive uses of color, line and visible brushwork.
What defines Vincent van Gogh’s style?
Van Gogh is commonly associated with Post-Impressionism. His work is recognized for visible brushstrokes, strong color relationships, rhythmic lines and compositions that transform familiar subjects such as flowers, fields, bedrooms, portraits and night skies.
His subjects, palette and painting methods changed across different periods and locations. Products in this collection therefore range from darker early subjects and self-portraits to bright flowers, orchards, wheat fields and night scenes.
